casual layers

hi, friends!

i’m back.  sorry for the two week hiatus.  i was sick and had a couple of very busy work weeks, and i just couldn’t get it all in.  anyway, i’m back with a casual outfit of the day post for some inspiration.  since spring is here and the seasons are changing, this is the time for transitional dressing and layers.  right now it can be warm during the day but cool in the mornings and at night, so being able to layer confidently will get you through this time of year with ease, and having a “third piece” in every outfit will add polish to your appearance.

this is a really casual, grunge-meets-boho look that incorporates mixed prints and textures.  i tend to be cold so i like to have a sweater pretty much until it hits 80 degrees.  one key nugget of advice you should keep in mind is the more you mix-and-match, the more “styled” you will look.  you’ve heard me mention before that always adding a “third piece,” will help elevate your outfits and keep you looking polished.  what i mean by this is rather than just wearing bottoms and a top, you add in that third item to your outfit for an extra dose of style.  it can be a jacket, sweater, vest, scarf, open button-down…just adding that one more layer, though, will anchor your look by making it appear more complete.

they key to mixing prints is to keep it looking intentional by mixing different types of prints with similar color schemes.  plaid and stripes are easy to mix and a great first step — for example, wear your favorite sailor striped tee with a plaid blazer and white jeans for a casual but statement-making weekend look.  add some brown suede ankle boots to bring it back to earth.  stripes and florals also look great together, and are a no-brainer combination for springtime.
