photoshoot

she rings like a bell through the night

hi friends!

it’s been a while since my last post.  consistency is really important to me, but i have been very busy with my job so blogging had to be put on hold!  this post has reunited myself and my girl mollie from the real bad kitty, and we are back at it with another over-the-top, bohemian goddess photoshoot.  all photos were again taken by her father, jason hancock.  he is a great sport and an even better photographer for us!

if you are at all a fan of the bohemian aesthetic and some of the most well-known boho brands in the business, you have probably heard of novella royale.  this is a wonderful usa-based company that focuses on sustainability and classic bohemian style.  their “janis bells,” made of a supersoft recycled fabric, are arguably their trademark item.  they fit and feel like a pair of high-waisted, flared leggings and are both wildly comfortable and flattering. in addition to the great fit, they come in a wide variety of prints that feature beautiful, vibrant colors. for a couple of petite girls, it doesn’t get much better than a high-waisted fit and a bellbottom silhouette to really lengthen your legs and make you appear taller. and for tall girls, prepare to feel like a supermodel!  the bold colors of the pants inspired our trek to dragon park here in nashville to shoot in front of the colorful mosaic tiles that decorate the park’s eponymous sculpture.

ON ME: hat – free people; tank – free people; bralette – free people; bells – novella royale; shoes – jeffrey campbell; coin necklace – top knot goods; horn   pendant – free people.  ON MOLLIE: hat – free people (via my closet); tank – nordstrom; bralette – urban outfitters; bells – novella royale; shoes – jeffrey campbell.

my look is essentially a recreation of an outfit i wore out on the town last week.  i got so many compliments on them, i was actually astounded. interestingly enough, all of said compliments came from men.  perhaps they were being facetious.  mollie and i actually both own these in the color she is wearing (we each got them unbeknownst to the other; great minds think alike!), and she also owns a pair in an ivory/black color way.  they are the kind of piece that once you wear them, you want them in a million colors because they are so comfortable and easy.  these pants are extremely versatile; you can dress them up like we did with your sky-high heels and a pretty blouse, or (if you’re tall) you could even go so far as to wear them very casually with flat sandals and a cool graphic tee.  they really run the spectrum of dressy to casual.  plus, they’re just so darn special.

to be really honest, this look is slightly out of my comfort zone because it’s such a statement (and because heels are 100% required).  i am usually really low key, but i decided to give these a go because they were just so pretty!  i’m really glad i did because they are easy to make your own and actually really fun to style and play with in regards to proportion.  obviously, they look awesome with a more fitted (and perhaps cropped?) tee or tank, but  i love them with the flowy tank i am wearing. i will also wear them with an oversized tee to make them slightly more casual.  they will also transition well into fall with oversized sweaters and long boyfriend cardigans; i will probably wear a pair of tights underneath them for extra warmth!  i bet you have an old pair of flares in your closet.  why not pull them out and try them on with some new items from your closet?  you’ll be surprised how mixing older pieces with new will make them feel fresh like you just bought them!  it’s not like you’re still going to wear them with your old pink abercrombie polo.

not to preach, but it’s easy for all of us — even me — to get stuck in a rut and to hesitate to try new things.  i feel as though it’s very common to see looks or pieces that inspire you and that you love, but to say “oh, i could never pull that off.”  it always makes me a little sad to hear a friend say that about something they are so drawn to.  fashion is an expression of who you are, so don’t be afraid to wear the pieces you like!  personally, i am so inspired by the 70’s and bohemian style (stevie nicks is one of my style icons!), but have sometimes felt that it was too corny or overdone.  ultimately, though, i have just decided to say, “to heck with it!” to any negative thought about what i like or want to wear.  if i love it, then by golly i am going to wear it and make it my own.  life is too short not to do the things that make you happy.  also, it doesn’t hurt that i really don’t care if people laugh at me.

fun fact: i actually didn’t have to hem these.  since they fit like a legging, it’s pretty easy to scrunch them up to get them to fit.  although, i will probably hem them after i’ve washed them a few times (just to be safe!).

if you can’t tell, we had quite a lot of fun playing around on the playground. we risked it in our platforms.

before we left for the park, we wanted to take a couple shots in mollie’s phenomenal vintage peacock chair. this bad boy is probably 6 feet tall and in pristine condition. she found him in the middle of backwoods kentucky for $75. she hit the craigslist jackpot!
