hi, friends!
welcome to this week’s installment, which is dedicated to helping you update your style by incorporating one of spring 2015’s best trends — flares! the 1970’s boho staple made their way down several runways for the spring 2015 collections (here, let me cite my sources), thus skyrocketing to the top of the trends list for the season. if you are looking for an update and a risk-free trend to try to amp your style game, flares are your ticket!
pants – novella royale; sweater – free people; necklace – free people {old; similar here}; hat – nordstrom {old; similar here}
believe it or not, flares are quite a classic pant silhouette, especially when considering any denim iterations. they are flattering on many body types, and while they certainly lend a bohemian feel to a look when styled a certain way, they are a very versatile addition to any woman’s wardrobe. the novella royale bells i’m wearing have been featured on my blog before, and i own two different patterns because they are so fun and so comfortable. they make an instant statement and i wanted to wear them again to show you that they look great year round. if you’re interested in this trend but don’t want to buy a crazy printed version like me, i’d highly encourage you to give flared denim a try. you may even have a pair hiding in your closet that you can break out!
one thing that’s key when it comes to wearing this pant silhouette is that the length has to be perfect to create the illusion of mile-long legs. under no circumstances should you be wearing a flared pant that does not come all the way to the floor. if you can see your shoes, the optical illusion is killed, so you must take into account the length of the pant when selecting your footwear. for me, i wear my very highest heels when i wear any flares so that i appear taller (and also because most of them come in extremely long inseams) and try to find them in a mid- to high-rise cut. i choose not to get them hemmed because if i did that, the bell would lose its shape and width. if you are tall, you have the luxury of being able to wear your flares with flatter shoes (or buy some with an extra long inseams and turn yourself into a glamazon!).
STYLE TIP
peep these madewell high-waisted flares i’m crushing on. they are at the top of my wishlist. this silhouette would look phenomenal on a variety of figures and would be appropriate for just about any aesthetic. you can make them casual friday-appropriate with a pair of chunky mules, your favorite white v-neck tee (tucked in!), a brown belt, and your favorite black blazer. don’t forget your favorite delicate jewelry. that outfit would take you from your desk to happy hour in one fell swoop. wear them out dancing on saturday night with a strappy silk cami, pretty jewelry, and a comfortable pair of sandals or platform booties. wear them sunday morning to brunch with your friends with a top-knot, your favorite bright lipstick, a bateau striped tee, and nude wedges. if you’re feeling adventurous, play a bit with proportion and wear them casually with a slip (just keep it short) or tunic top. or, go full-on boho babe and channel your inner penny lane with a peasant blouse.

litas come out to play again! platforms are back this season as well and they pair perfectly with flares. not a coincidence.
ye olde fashion blogger hair-tuck.
lipstick – nars in dragon girl
beauty tip
these nars velvet matte lip pencils are a super easy way to try bright lipsticks if you are a bit hesitant. the formula can be a little drying, but they are crazy easy to apply and the colors are beautiful, so the pros outweight the cons. just make sure to prep with a lip balm to combat the dryness.
i hope this post gives you some ideas of how to incorporate flares into your style, or maybe an idea of how to reinvent the wheel if you’re already a loyal sporter of bells. what do you all think of the photos? i think yet again, delaney knocked it out of the park with these shots and our other-wordly location. let us know if there’s anything you’d like to see more of or shots we’re not getting that you want! also, please comment with any fashion/beauty questions you have and i’ll do my best to address them in coming posts!
that’s a wrap, folks! ➸
many thanks for reading!
